THE AMERICAN IDEALISM
During a visit to Europe recently, I looked for evidence of the same body awareness among the natives, but it was not as apparent. The women were no less attractive than the American women, but they had obviously not invested the same effort in perfecting their physical endowment. Any advertiser worth his salt knows that sex and beauty are the sensitive nerves on which to romp, and he must somehow link his products to those motivations, regardless of how contrived the connection might be. We’re sold toothpaste that grants sex appeal… and breakfast cereal that makes us better looking… and mints that guarantee a second kiss and a bath-oil product for ladies that proclaims, “If he doesn’t feel the difference, he has no fuse.” …She is promised that she isn’t getting “older,” she’s getting “better.” …There is no way to estimate the number of dollars spent each year to make us more competitive in an eroticized society. …Increased sensuality in America……
