She died beside a fence smeared with her blood. It wasn’t that she had done anything wrong. She just happened to be the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time: A twenty-something single white woman in South Africa, a land bubbling with racial and political tension. Amy Biehl was there because she loved Africa and Africans. She had studied Xhosa, a South African language, and was all set to return to America in two days to begin doctoral studies at Rutgers University. When the confrontation came, Amy remained calm.
