BEEN GONE A SPELL
In his early days Calvin Coolidge practiced law in Northhampton, Massachusetts. He used to walk daily from his home to his law office. Every day he passed his neighbor Hiram, a man of few words. This is the conversation that went on for over twenty years: Hiram would say, “Hi Cal.” Cal would say, “Hi Hiram.” Hiram would say, “Nice day, Cal.” Cal would say, “Nice day, Hiram.” Then Coolidge was elected to the State Assembly, became Lieutenant-Governor, governor, Vice-President of the United States and, finally, President of the United States. But when his presidency was over, he went back to Northhampton and returned to his law office. Once again he began the practice of walking to his law office. Hiram was on the porch. “Hi Cal.” “Hello Hiram.” “Nice day, Cal.” Nice day, Hiram.” But the conversation continued. “Ain’t seen ya around lately, Cal.” “Nope,” said Cal, “been away quite a spell.” Would that fit under: “There’s nothing new…
