TRAGEDY AROUND US
Tragedy fills the news. Did you hear about Christopher Maytag? He was the grandson of Frederic L. Maytag, the founder of the Maytag company (you know–washers, dryers, etc.) An heir to a fortune, everything going for him, everything he could possibly want! – – He was found in a hallway of a Lower East Side housing project in Manhattan, semiconscious from a drug overdose. He died a few hours later. What a tragedy! He has everything, and then gets into drugs, ruins his life, and kills himself. What a tragedy! Every week there are hundreds, even thousands of individual, personal tragedies of all kinds happening like this – – if we could hear about them all. The newspapers and TV just report the tip of the iceberg. Human life is full of tragedy in many ways — human sin, putting God out of our lives–that tendency in all of us, to look to everything but God for happiness and joy, to…
