FREE TO BE ME
In our attempts to organize and categorize others we often overlook the uniqueness of individuals. Dr. G. H. Reavis, a school administrator, illustrated this fact with his “Animal Story.” Once upon a time the animals decided they must do something heroic to meet the problems of the “New World.” So they organized a school. They adopted an activity curriculum consisting of running, swimming, and flying. To make it easier to administer the curriculum, it was decided that all of the animals should take all of the subjects. The duck was excellent in swimming. In fact, he was far better than his instructor, but he could not do more than make passing grades in flying and was very poor in running. Since he was so slow in running, he had to remain after school and drop swimming in order to practice running. This was kept up until his web feet were badly worn and he was only average in swimming.
