DREAM WAKING
Claudia Glenn Dowling wrote of the men who attempted the most difficult climb to the peak of Mt. Everest – the only ones who have ever survived that attempt – up the northeast route, and paraglide from the peak: They had this dream — to climb to the top of the world and fly off. A lot of us dream of flying, escaping all the gravity that grounds us — relationships, responsibilities — to soar as free as the wind. Freedom and security, escape and return, flight and landing, our warring fantasies are bound together… The difference between our dreams and theirs is that they dream waking. They know how to climb to the top of the world. They know how to fly. We all have dreams; we all want to fly. We can begin to “dream waking.” From “Too Near the Sun,” Life, September, 1991
