ORDINARY BELIEVERS
We conservatives should ask ourselves why is it the ordinary believers can go on trusting the Bible, even though it appears to have defects due to transmission and discrepancies due to unknown causes. How do they go on believing the Bible when so many technical details remain unresolved? The answer is obvious and important. Believers do not depend for their certainty at this crucial point upon the experts in some seminary but upon God, who speaks to them in the Scriptures. They can tolerate some uncertainties and perplexities because their confidence does not rest on human expertise, liberal or conservative, but on God himself. They are not tied to human authorities but free in the liberty of the children of God. They know that what is primary is the saving and transforming truth of the Bible and what is secondary are those curious numbers, those details that will not line up, those obscure allusions that do not begin to upset the truly…
