POSITIVE WITNESS
No matter what else I did in life, I would be a Christian. I soon discovered that people were not content when I told them that I was a Christian; they wanted to know what kind of Christian, what adjective, what denomination. After I became Surgeon General, the press often referred to me as a fundamentalist Christian. In one sense that is right, because I affirm the fundamental doctrines of Christianity. But fundamentalists are more known for what they are against that what they are for. That label never fit me. I always called myself an evangelical Christian. Evangelist means messenger, bearer of news. An evangelical Christian carries to others the good news of the mercy of Christ. From Koop: The Memoirs of the Former Surgeon General, by C. Everett Koop, by Paul A. Noxon, Fellowship Baptist Church, Castleton, New York
