UNDERCOVER BAG-LADY
After a busy day, my wife and I made a late-evening stop at Denny’s restaurant. That’s where we met Betty. Her appearance in every way said she was “a bag-lady” from around 6th and Chester. Unmatched shoes, sagging bobby-socks, her slip showing beneath a gaudy, out-dated dress, an ugly crocheted sweater and a stocking cap. Her face was smudged and without a trace of make-up. On any other night of the year, we would have been appalled to have a “bag-lady” as our waitress. But on Halloween night, we laughed at and thoroughly enjoyed Betty’s performance, which she played to the hilt. Asking if I could use her charade as a sermon illustration… she offered that without the Lord’s help, she would never have made it through some twenty years of customer demands on a waitress. The Lord told Samuel (1 Samuel 16:7), “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” We had to wonder how many…
