EVANGELISM THROUGH BEAUTY
There is a story in the Russian Primary Chronicle that tells of Vladimir, Prince of Kiev, who sent several of his followers in search of the true religion. First, they went to the Moslem Bulgars of the Volga, but found “no joy,” only a “mournfulness and a great smell.” Then they went to Germany and Rome and found the worship more satisfactory but still lacking in beauty. Finally, they came to Constantinople, and–attending the Church of the Holy Wisdom–they discovered what they were seeking. Consequently, they reported to Vladimir, “We knew not whether we were in heaven or on earth, for surely there is no such splendor or beauty anywhere upon the earth. We cannot describe it to you: only this we know, that God dwells there among men, and that their service surpasses the worship of all other places.
