FAKE FACADES
“In Orlando, Florida, Disney and Universal have built rival studios and corresponding studio tours. At both attractions the companies have built old-fashioned back lots, with a simulated New York street, a Middle-America courthouse square, and quiet Leave-It-to-Beaver neighborhoods. They say these are working sets, but that’s a little snow-white lie. Directors don’t use back lots anymore, except for the odd TV commercial. The sets are for tourists. So what we have is a situation in which the facades are themselves fakes. They are there to create the illusion of facades.” From Why Things Are, by Joel Achenback, published by Ballantine, New York, 1991, pg. 34
