PERFECT FROM A DISTANCE
In Trafalgar Square in London, England, there is a 100 foot monument erected to Lord Nelson in honor of his defeat of the French Navy in 1805. A few blocks away and across from the House of Commons is another monument erected to a more contemporary figure in British and World history, Winston Churchll. It is mounted only a foot off the ground on a square piece of granite. As I stood looking at Churchill’s statute I saw the characteristic boller hat, cigar, cane and slightly bent posture. Because of the height of the mount I could carefully study the gaze of the face and the eyes. But something more as well. Pigeon droppings covered the shoulders and top of the hat. I didn’t see such defacing on the Lord Nelson monument. It was elevated too high for such observation. I was struck with a parallel in human relationships.
