NEARER MY GOD
A face of grace and a handshake firm escorted me on my initial encounter into Bill’s relaxed and pleasant presence. Bill was a mortician in a small Texas town. And as life surprises our beings, we found ourselves working together on many an occasion. Bill had a means of making the journey from the church house to the cemetery an enjoyable and memorable experience. He would sing and hum his favorite hymns as we discussed and drove, leading a procession of cars to the graveyard on the edge of town. Wisdom can be gleaned from other folks if one respects and listens to the soul, and in looking back, I received many insights from Bill into the human condition at death and burial time. Once Bill told me, “you never know what song is in the heart of a person. But if you listen to the words from their mouths, you can hear their melody.” One winter day we journeyed together…
