GETTING THINGS INTO PERSPECTIVE
Two Greek sculptors competed for the placing of a statue on a pillar in the public square. One worked skillfully until the statue looked almost lifelike – smoothed and polished. The other left his block of marble crude and jagged. You could hardly tell that it was a human being. The first statue was put up on the pillar, but the higher it went the more blurred it became. When finally in place, it could not be recognized for what it was. They took it down and put up the other statue. To everyone’s amazement, from this perspective, it became lifelike and beautiful. Some of the great teachings of the ages – especially those of Christ – don’t come into perspective until we get to a certain stage of maturity.
