SURGEON MATERIAL
A young woman grew up in the most squalid of slum circumstances. She decided at age eight that she would become a physician. Against all odds, she accomplished that goal. Today, she is a respected surgeon. No other person in her grade-school class rose above the impediments of that negative environment in which she grew up. What made the difference between her and others? Intelligence, persistence, and hard work helped. But these qualities would not have been sufficient without a positive self-identity. Because she BELIEVED she was physician material, she kept moving toward that destination. Because self-identity controls so much of our behavior, it is a prime determiner of personal success for each of us. As the writer of Proverbs observed, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…” (Proverbs 23:7 KJV).
