Church Assimilation Process Overview by Michael Hodgin Effective church assimilation provides the means for those who are “on the outside” of the church to get “on the inside” of the church. People visit churches for a variety of reasons. And once they arrive, churches have a unique opportunity to welcome them or to shun them. Few churches maximize the potential to welcome or shun newcomers, but all churches tend toward one or the other response–welcoming or shunning. Those who are welcomed by a church will encounter a congregation that shows that they care for newcomers and have room in their lives for them. The degree of welcoming or shunning may relate to a lack of understanding or concern, or it may relate to an active interest for ill or for good.
