LEFT HUNGRY
Abigail, age 3 and I are at a church one Sunday – not ours – or a special service. It’s been a long service and she’s looking forward to communion (to get up and move around). We do communion – or rather, I do, and she gets a hands-on-the-head blessing which she is not too crazy about from a pastor she doesn’t know. On our way away from the communion rail, she sits down on the strip – chin on hands – glaring. Realizing this may be the beginning of a major scene, I quickly scoop her up back to our pew. She buries her head in my shoulders and is crying… I know she’s tired and it’s nearly lunch-time, but I can’t figure out this reaction.
