BREAD AND FISH
From a sermon by William Carter. He writes this about the feeding of the 5,000: In Matthew’s gospel, when the twelve said, “Lord, get rid of the crowd,” Jesus responded, “You give them something to eat.” Now that’s a striking aspect of the story. Jesus does not turn stones into loaves of bread to feed the crowd. Instead he demands that his followers pitch in and give their own bread and fish. There is no mention of a young boy who offers his lunch; that’s in the Gospel of John. This is Matthew, and in Matthew, Jesus says, “You give them something to eat.” They respond, “All we have are five loaves and a couple of fish.” So Jesus asks for it. They give Jesus everything they possess. He thanks God for it. He breaks the bread and gives them back the bread in order for them to give it away to others.
