SHE ANSWERS ANY KNOCK
Some time back a woman from Harlem was honored by the City of New York for her amazing record of taking children into her home on referral from social agencies and literally off the streets, many of them abandoned by parents on drugs, many of them orphaned by domestic violence. A reporter describing the award ceremony wrote: “Tall, huge-framed, gaunt; yet queenly, rugged dark beauty, early sixties, bearing like a Mother of all Africa, she held the little brass and wooden plaque and us in her huge hands, leaned on a crutch, and said, ‘I’ve had over 500 children in my little shack, and they tell me that they are different because of it – and as long as I can get to my door, I will answer any knock.'” From Don Shelby, United Methodist Church, Santa Monica California
