Many years ago a Moravian missionary went to the West Indies to preach to the slaves there. He was a good, sincere and eloquent man, but he could win no one for the Lord. When he preached, he could not even get a respectable hearing. The slaves were driven so hard at work that they had time for nothing but their own physical needs. Early in the morning they were off to the fields, and it was dark when they came back. They would then gnaw the crust of bread that was provided for their supper and collapse in exhaustion on the pile of straw that was their bed. Even beyond the lack of opportunity to preach to them, the missionary realized that they resented him because he was white like their taskmasters. Finally he realized that there was only one solution. He actually sold himself into slavery. When they went to the field he went too. He shared their bonds…
