Herb Caen also tells one of those “Awwwwww” stories: So here we are at the Concord Jr. Optimist Baseball League game between the Royals and the Tigers (eight-and-nine-yr.-olds) and a Royal batter hits a drive that the Tiger right fielder, John Tischler, makes no attempt to catch. At the end of the inning, the coach demanded “How come?” and John opened his glove to display a caterpillar he had picked up in the field. “If I had caught the ball, my new friend would have been killed,” said the Charlie Brown of Concord.
