GIFT OF LIFE
In December of 1988 the Soviet province of Armenia suffered a tragic earthquake, which killed some 55,000 people. Out of that tragedy came the story of Susanna Petrosyan. On the day of the quake, Susanna and her daughter Guyaney were visiting Susanna’s sister-in-law when the earthquake hit. As they opened the door to escape the fifth floor apartment, the building collapsed and the three of them plummeted to the basement with the nine story building crumbling around them. Susanna and her daughter lay trapped on their backs, entombed in eternal night with only a jar of jam. Within two days her sister-in-law was dead and the jar of jam was gone. The days passed and the little girl’s pleas for something to drink became more pressing until her daughter was literally sobbing for something to drink.
