THE MONUMENT TO NOTHING
In Guyana, 60 miles up the Essequibo River, we found a village of about a few thousand people. The village is “Bartica” and it served as the supply center for thousands of miners and prospectors working the rugged mountains further up river. In the center of that village is a lovely town square where stands a huge white monument mounted on a concrete slab. It was an impressive memorial, looming above the crossroads of the village. I walked around the slab to read the inscription. There was none. So I turned to one of the citizens walking by and asked, “Can you tell me; what does this monument commemorate?” He thought a while and answered, “I don’t know.” Others gave the same answer. Even “Old timers” couldn’t remember, and the younger people were never told. How strange; a monument to nothing! A memorial that had no memory and thus no meaning.
