THROUGH THE FIRE
Near Glenwood Springs, Colorado in July of 1994, forest fires raged on Storm King Mountain. Fire fighters were battling the blaze when fifty-mile-an-hour winds shifted direction and blew the exploding firestorm back into their faces. The fire fighters ran as fast as they could, any way they could. Thirty-eight made it. Fourteen did not. Their bodies were found in their aluminum fire tents, designed to protect them in the event they were stranded in the fire. These thin metallic tents could not withstand the power of the firestorm. The fire fighters who ran through the fire into the black scorched earth lived. The thin shelters of our own righteousness cannot protect us from the justice of God.
