THE RED-FACED MONKEY
A fakir came to an Indian village, declaring he could make gold. The villagers gathered around him as he poured water in a tub and then, putting some coloring matter into it, he began to stir it with a stick and to repeat his incantations. When their attention was diverted, he let some gold nuggets slip down the stick. He poured the water off and there was pure gold at the bottom! The villagers’ eyes bulged. The money lender offered a fortune for the formula. The fakir explained in explicit detail how to make the gold and then added, “But you must not think of a red-faced monkey as you stir, or the gold will not come.” The man promised to remember what he was to forget.
