Angel Martino won a bronze medal for finishing third place in the 100 meter freestyle competition at the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. But Angel gave her medal away to a friend Trisha Henry. Trisha is Angel’s life-long friend and a member of her equipment team. A week prior to the competition, Trisha was in the hospital for the removal of her kidney as a result of cancer. The day Trisha was released from the hospital was the day that the competition began. Trisha was fulfilling her duties with the equipment crew when Angel received her medal. Angel went to Trisha and gave her the medal and told her “I’m thinking of you. I think you’re a hero. Keep fighting.” Angel met with the media afterward and answered their questions concerning the race.
