GETTING MORE BY GIVING
Out near Concord, Massachusetts, there is a wayside vegetable stand which we like to patronize. The reason we drive ten miles out of our way to patronize that stand is because of an experience we had there years ago. That day we were total strangers to the Italian family which runs that stand. I ordered a peck of peaches, and when the fine, tanned, tall, rugged Italian boy who waited on me had filled the peck to overflowing so that the peaches ran off the top and fell to the ground, I said, “Hey, there, pal, you are giving more than good measure!” “Oh, we always like to give good measure, full and overflowing,” he replied. Then he added with a wink, “It’s good business!” After he had emptied that peck into a paper sack, he added a few additional peaches. “But what do you get out of that kind of business?” I asked him, with an assumed cynicism which…
