WHAT TO DO WITH CYNICS
Everyone must have a voice, but cynics must be silenced. The most ardent foes of change are those with the most to lose, which means they have power. Says William Hudson, chief executive of AMMP, the maker of electronic connectors: “They want to drag you back to their comfort zone.” Hudson handles them by laying down a few “non- negotiables”-decisions must be made close to the action, for example; the words “I” and “my” may not be applied to departments. To fill in the details of his vision, he relies on task forces of executives, scattering the cynics among them. It happens every time, Hudson says; “The groups say, ‘Doggone it,’ and put the cynics on the spot.” Those who won’t help raise the sails jump ship.
