LIKABLE LETHARGY
When I was a teenager, I was dating a Methodist pastor’s daughter. One Sunday I was invited to their home after church for dinner. While the pastor’s wife and daughters were finishing dinner preparations, I sat uncomfortably in the living room with the minister. I felt ill at ease and tried to impress the pastor with my conversation. At one point I remarked, “I sure enjoyed the lethargy at church this morning.’ He smiled and replied, “It may have been lethargy but I think you mean liturgy.” This experience stuck with me. Is Sunday morning a time for liturgy or lethargy? Is our worship energizing or does it put us to sleep? Liturgy is not time for lethargy. It is a time to experience the joy of the Lord and be energized to serve him.An actual account from Michael W. Malone, Bethel United Methodist Church, Anderson, Indiana
