In the excellent book, What Wives Wish Their Husbands Knew About Women, James Dobson looks at the negative stigma that has been attached by our society to stay-at-home moms. He compares the phenomenon to a fictitious stigma attached to dentists. He supposes that it became very unpopular to be a dentist. Magazines began to carry articles about their stupidity. They made them out to be foolish “tooth-and-gum boys.” Television commercials and programs all began to poke fun at dentists. Eventually the humor associated with dentistry was replaced by a growing contempt and disregard for these teeth doctors. This sub-class of people and their families were ignored and excluded from social gatherings and activities. Dentist found it harder and harder to hire assistants and associates; no one wanted anyone to know that he or she was working for a “tooth fairy.” All social status was suddenly removed from this profession.
