RABBIT SACRIFICE
An otter, a jackal, and a monkey were going about on their usual rounds. It happened to be a fast day–a day on which they were expected to be especially considerate to beggars who might be in need. The otter went down to the bank of the river, and came upon seven red fish nicely strung together. The otter shouted three times: “Do these fish belong to anyone?” No one answered. He quickly dragged the fish to his lair, lay down cross-legged, and meditated on the great catch he had made, and his virtue in not having eaten them immediately. The jackal found a pot of curd. He cried three times–but not too loud: “To whom does this pot of curd belong?” There was no answer. He hurried to his hole with the pot and fell into deep meditation on the ethic of the situation.
