THE SHEPHERDS AND THE SHEPHERD
The Christmas message, “Jesus is born,” was announced to shepherds as they watched their flocks by night. They had probably huddled their sheep together in a large cave that cut into one of the many hills that surrounded Bethlehem. As one who tours Israel stands at the mouth of just such a cave, the mind evokes the beauty of that moment, the moment of discovery, the moment of announcement, the moment of truth. Jesus is born, the Savior has arrived, God has become a human baby. As one walks into the caves of Bethlehem, those caves that were used for stables with mangers hewn into the stone walls of the cave, that person cannot help but understand the exalted mission of the lowly shepherds. The shepherds visited the Christ-child in obedience to the angelic commission, they confessed the baby’s identity in that which they said and that which they did.
