JELLY BEAN TRADING
The Apostle Paul prayed for the Ephesians that they would know how “wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ and to know this love that surpasses knowledge…” The result of this understanding is that they would be “filled to the measure” with God’s fullness. Think of a society where the most valuable thing people have is their own supply of jelly beans. They love jelly beans. Jelly beans come in such a variety that they gladly trade with one another. If I give you three jelly beans, you need to give me three jelly beans. If I give you seven, you need to give me seven. If I give five, you give five. If I give you ten, and you give me only seven, there will be tension in our relationship. I’ll get mad. I’ll hold a grudge. I won’t trade with you anymore. I’ll keep a mental note of what you owe me.
