PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY
There’s the marvelous old story about the smart alec kid who tried to pose a puzzler for an old man. He told him, “I have a bird in my hand — is it alive? Or is it dead?” He knew that if the old man said “Alive,” he could crush it and prove he was wrong. If he said “Dead” he would open his hands and let it fly away — again proving he was wrong. But the old man was not so easily trapped. He said, “The answer, alive or dead, is in your power and in your hands. It is what you will!” During Lent we take a hard look at our lives, and discover they are indeed in our hands — to be alive or to be dead. God has given us the power. It is what we will.
