FAITHFUL FOCUS
In February of 1986 the Kansas City Star carried an article on Anatoly Shcharansky’s values and faith. The piece was entitled, “Beliefs strong enough to keep one alive,” and it analyzed what it was that kept this Jewish Soviet dissident alive during “nearly nine years of prison, intimidation and deprivation. Nine years, in other words, of hell.” How did he survive? The article states: “When Mr. Shcharansky finally was released, he carried with him only one possession – – a Book of Psalms, that part of Holy Scripture most often relied on by Jews and Christians alike for comfort and inspiration in times of trouble. The Psalms, many of which are attributed to King David, are a rich lode of divine guidance and wisdom.” The Article continues: “Unlike a lot of people who believe in nothing more permanent, sustaining or true than the celebrity on the cover of this week’s People magazine, Anatoly Shcharansky was and is deeply rooted in his religion…
