A FATHER’S THREE SUGGESTIONS
In Herman Wouk’s novel, “The Caine Mutiny,” Willie Keith receives a letter from his father, the victim of an incurable disease. In it the father offers his son three suggestions. The first was: “There is nothing, nothing more precious than time… wasted hours destroy your life.” The second suggestion has to do with religion. “I’m afraid we haven’t given you much, not having much religion ourselves. But, I think, after all, I will mail you a Bible before I go to the hospital… Get familiar with the words. You will never regret it. I came to the Bible, like everything in life, too late. Thirdly, Son, think of me… when you come to the crossroads. For my sake, for the sake of the father who took the wrong turn, take the right ones.” They are words of indescribable pathos. A father had lost the way and was sending a Bible to his son! He had been self-centered, and developed habits…
