TOPICAL PREACHING
A freshly certified lay Methodist preacher in Wales, in one of his earliest sermons in a rough, bawdy mining town, decided to preach on the text: “Enoch walked with God and he was not for God took him.” (Gen. 5:24) The sermon turned quickly to a diatribe when the earnest but misguided brother asked, “And what was it that Enoch was not?” He proceeded to point out that Enoch “was not” a drunkard, a gambler, a sabbath-breaker, or a swearer. This may be the ultimate in isogesis! Campbell’s Notebook, Vol. IX, No. 3.
