RELEVANT RESEARCH
John J. Shouring received a doctorate from the University of Illinois for his “Study of Some Physical Chemical Factors Affecting Shrinkage of Ice Cream.” Purdue University awarded Kirk Kermit Hale a Ph.D. for his “Flavor and Other Quality Attributes of Pre-Cooked, Wet-Chilled and Dry-Chilled Fried Chicken.” Penn State’s doctorate to Herman Grill was for the “Characteristic Aroma of Trappist-Type Cheese.” And Mary Maumee Runnels received her doctorate from Texas Women’s University with “The Effect of Low Temperature Laundering on Men’s White Shirts.” These research efforts seem so irrelevant until we realize that many of these studies were motivated by commercial interests, companies that have much money and interest in these subjects. We must remember that the worthiness of our goal comes from the one who calls us to the pursuit. We must not question when God’s projects for us seem beneath us. Likewise, as leaders, we must constantly discern if our goals are truly relevant to issues of eternity versus the mundane…
