READING EVEN THE BEGATS
A learned old missionary lady was teaching a Bible class. One day she explained to her class that she had a system that enabled her to read the entire Bible, Old and New Testament during the course of a calendar year. One of the students commented that though they had read the Bible through more than once, she confessed she tended to skip parts — like the begats in the genealogies. They were boring and told the teacher so. So she asked the teacher what her practice was when she came to the begats. She answered, “I read them, of course. They are a part of the Scripture, you know.” The pupil said, “But what on earth could I possibly learn by reading them over, year after year?” The teacher had a twinkle in her eyes when she answered, “Patience, my dear, patience.”
