BUSTED OUT
Reading the Bible was a duty and a chore- definitely not something a red-blooded 11-year-old boy would choose to do on a Sunday afternoon. Walt Fleming changed that for me. A substitute Sunday school teacher, Walt actually believed that the stories of the Scripture were lively and should be taught that way. In a flawless Humphrey Bogart imitation, Walt retold Acts 16 as a classic jailbreak scene-Paul and Silas helpless in the “slammer” with nobody available to “go bail,” with the authorities ready to “put the screws on.” To this day, over 30 years later, I can’t read Acts 16 without hearing Walt Fleming say with a smile: “Now, listen up and listen good. Paul and Silas got busted out, and Jesus goin’ to do that for you too!” When a teacher really believes that God’s Word is living, we all get “busted out”!
