TOO MANY SPECTATORS
There was once a king who was about to celebrate his birthday. The people of his kingdom decided that they would give him a gift — they decided that at exactly 12 noon everyone in the Kingdom would shout out “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” Finally the day and hour arrived. Like New Year’s Eve on Times Square, all the people kept their eyes on the clock. Then the moment of 12 o’clock came — but there was complete silence, not a sound. What happened was this: a young couple got the bright idea that it would be fun to hear this noise for themselves. They agreed to open their mouths widely, but they would only pretend to yell. Instead, they would listen. Unfortunately, each told a friend and the idea spread throughout the kingdom. No one thought that his or her contribution would be missed.
