SETTLING DIFFERENCES
In LaGrange, Georgia, the Mediation Center has been established to ease the court loads and bring about more effective settlements of disputes. The center reported an 88% rate of settling cases referred from municipal, magistrate, and state courts. The Mediation Center addresses a variety of issues, including disputes between neighbors and friends, domestic problems, harassing telephone calls, property damage, and other matters. Things didn’t go so well on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 1991, however, as Ronnie Farmer and Bobby Fowler got into a slugfest on the way to their mediation hearing! Court Administrator Al Lively said the two men had been referred to mediation for abusive language, but they never got to their hearing. “They started fighting as soon as they walked in the door.” Farmer and Fowler were arrested for disorderly conduct.
