“Mommy! Come and see!” The five-year-old’s eager tone penetrated to the depths of the laundry room where she was up to her elbows in suds. “I can’t come, Steve. Tell me what it is.” “Frustration replaced excitement. “I can’t, Mommy. You have to come and see for yourself.” Knowing that his stamina would outlast hers, she dried her arms and headed up the stairs. He met her, grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the back door. “Look — what is it?” He pointed to the rail on their deck. Outlined in sparkling detail by the morning dew, a small intricate spider web glistened in the sunlight. The two of them watched in silence. The web gradually became invisible as the sun dried the minute drops of water. A deep sigh expressed the boy’s satisfaction that they had been able to share the fleeting moment of beauty.
