One other item I gleaned from Buechner’s book was a quote that he shares with his readers from Karl Barth which was influential in F. B.’s concept of his role as a preacher. Buechner reflects back on his sermons preached at Exeter and observes: But beyond what I actually said in those sermons, I have wondered sometimes about what was in the back of my head as I sat in the library in a deep leather armchair with my feet on the radiator trying to figure out how to say it.
