CAN A MINISTER BE SAVED?
One other item I gleaned from Buechner’s book was a quote that he shares with his readers from Karl Barth which was influential in F. B.’s concept of his role as a preacher. Buechner reflects back on his sermons preached at Exeter and observes: But beyond what I actually said in those sermons, I have wondered sometimes about what was in the back of my head as I sat in the library in a deep leather armchair with my feet on the radiator trying to figure out how to say it. How did I approach my task? How did I think about the people I was saying it to? More than anything else, I think, I was influenced by a short piece of Karl Barth’s called The Need for Christian Preaching – – which I had read in seminary. “What are you doing, you man, with the word of God upon your lips?” Barth asks with italics and exclamation…
