Les Brown is an Emergency Med Tech in San Jose, California. He was driving home from work, exhausted and looking forward to being with his family, one Friday night, when he heard an emergency call come in on the police scanner he had in his car. A child was choking and needed help. 911 dispatched a rescue squad to the address. But Les realized he’d be able to get there before they could. The place was just a few blocks from the next exit off the freeway he was on. So he radioed in and said he was responding too. He pulled over the hill and then saw that the exit was blocked. It was being torn out for some kind of highway reconstruction. A sweaty young man in a hard-hat was maneuvering a large caterpillar tractor beside a deep trench he’d spent the day digging across the area. But Les ground his car to a stop at the blocked exit anyway.…
