NEED AND WANT
Sometimes we don’t know the difference between what we need and what we want. We want so much, but God gives us what we truly need. I heard the following story in an episode from the TV show, St. Elsewhere. One sunny summer day, a grandmother and her grandson were walking along the ocean. The little boy, the apple of his grandmother’s eyes, was dressed in his Sunday best from hat to shoe. Suddenly a huge wave broke onto the shore and swallowed the boy up and he disappeared from sight. The old woman prayed fervently that the Lord send back her grandson unharmed. She pledged to be eternally in His service if He would do that. Miraculously, the little boy was returned to shore unharmed and safe, albeit thoroughly soaked, and with his hair disheveled. The grandmother looked up to heaven and said, “You know, Lord . . . he had a hat.”
