HE FINISHED THE RACE
A lot of stories of courage and that championship spirit always come out of the Olympics. From Barcelona Spain came such a story concerning Derek Redmond. This 26 year old sprinter from London was running the 400 meter race when, after running only 150 meters, he fell with a hamstring injury. He waved off the officials who came with a stretcher. Struggled to his feet and began hopping, inches at a time, toward the finish line. All of a sudden, a man appeared at his side, threw his arm around him, and they walked the last 100 meters together, to the finish line. The man who leaped the railing and wound up on the track, was none other than Derek’s father, Jim Redmond who had been sitting high in the stands, watching his son run the race.
