COMING OUT OF THE DARKNESS
Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog, when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in, and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore with plummet and sounding-line, and you waited with beating heart for something to happen? I was like that ship before my education began, only I was without compass or sounding-line, and had no way of knowing how near the harbour was. Ours is not the stillness that soothes the weary senses. It is the inhuman silence that severs and estranges. It is the silence not to be broken by a word of greeting or the song of birds or the sign of a breeze. It is the silence which isolates cruelly, completely. It is to live long, long days and life is made up of days. It is to live immured, baffled, impotent, all God’s world shut out. It is to sit helpless, defrauded,…
