ATTITUDES DIFFER, DEPENDING
Years ago Jascha Heifetz, the violinist, made his debut in Carnegie Hall. Among those in the audience waiting to hear him were Josef Hofmann, the celebrated pianist, and Mischa Elman, a great violinist in his own right. The concert by Heifetz was a fabulous success. The more he played, the more enthusiastic the audience became. But it was a warm spring evening, and Elman eventually began to squirm and fidget. “It’s getting awfully hot in here, isn’t it?” he asked Hofmann. Hofmann whispered his reply in his ear, “Not for pianists!”
