SMOKELESS SPORTS?
These “poor” cigarette companies are catching it from every side. Louis Sullivan, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, is advising athletes and athletic associations not to accept sponsorship from cigarette companies. Domestic air flights are no longer able to permit smoking during flights. The latest television commercials are depicting smokers as cartoon cigarette butts, crumpled in half with arms, legs and faces. . . and are sarcastically calling them “buttheads!” It makes one wonder how it will all end. Will there be a smoker’s revolt? Will the cigarette companies continue to target minority groups and third world countries for their own survival? Maybe they will sponsor a national “smoke in day” and provide free cigarettes for everyone who wants to give it a try. One would hope that the air will clear soon. At that time we will all breathe easier.
